## Overview

<PlanAvailability plans="Business" />

Exclusions identify companies or people that should be kept out of outreach.
Use them to avoid prospecting into existing customers, open opportunities,
competitors, or your own team. Their filters match records as data changes, so
your team can maintain criteria instead of a static list.

Create exclusions in workspace settings and enable the relevant ones in each
[sequence ruleset](/reference/sequences/rulesets). For example, an existing-customer
exclusion can apply to prospecting sequences while remaining disabled for
customer follow-up sequences.

For users governed by an
[engagement policy](/reference/engagement-policies/engagement-policies), configure
exclusion restrictions in their policy. The policy's exclusions replace sequence
ruleset exclusions for those users.

## Create an exclusion

You need permission to manage workspace exclusions. An administrator can create
an exclusion or update its criteria for the team.

<Steps>
  <Step title="Name the exclusion">
    Open [**Settings → Exclusions**](https://app.unifygtm.com/dashboard/settings/features/exclusions)
    and click **New exclusion**. Enter a name that identifies who it matches,
    such as “Existing customers.”
  </Step>

  <Step title="Choose companies or people">
    Under **Conditions**, choose the type of records to match. A company
    exclusion also excludes people associated with those companies. Use a
    person exclusion when the criteria apply to individual contacts.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Set the criteria and review matches">
    Add conditions for the records you want to exclude. For a customer
    exclusion, use the CRM field that identifies customers; for a fixed group
    of companies, you can filter by domain.

    Review the preview to confirm that the filters match the intended records.
    In this example, a domain filter selects the company Beacon
    Analytics.

  </Step>

  <Step title="Apply it to rulesets">
    Click **Create exclusion**. In **Apply exclusion to rulesets?**, select the
    rulesets that should use it and review the estimated unenrollments before
    confirming.

    Enabling an exclusion can stop active enrollments that match. Choose the
    intended rulesets carefully, especially when prospecting and customer
    outreach share the same workspace.

  </Step>
</Steps>

## Choose exclusions for a sequence

A sequence uses the exclusions enabled in its ruleset. Open the ruleset from
[**Settings → Sequences → Rulesets**](https://app.unifygtm.com/dashboard/settings/features/sequences?tab=Rulesets),
expand **Exclusions**, and check the exclusions to enable. Click **Update** to
save.

The change affects every sequence using that ruleset. If only one sequence
needs different exclusions, duplicate the ruleset, adjust its selection, and
apply that ruleset to the sequence.

## How exclusions affect enrollments

Unify checks applicable exclusions when someone is enrolled. A matching person
cannot start the sequence. A company exclusion also applies when the person's
associated company matches its filters.

Exclusions continue to be evaluated for active enrollments. If a person starts
matching an enabled exclusion—for example, their company becomes a customer—
Unify stops the applicable enrollment. Updates are processed in the background,
so a CRM change must first reach Unify before it can affect the exclusion.

An enrollment stopped by an exclusion appears as excluded. Review the matching
exclusion and its filters before deciding whether the person should return to
outreach. Turning off an exclusion does not by itself start a new enrollment.

## Update an exclusion

In exclusion settings, open its actions menu and select **Edit**. Adjust the
filters, review the matches, and click **Update exclusion**. Review the
confirmation before applying the change.

An exclusion is shared wherever your team uses it, including rulesets, plays,
and engagement policies. Change its filters when the definition should change
for all of those uses. Change a ruleset's selection when only that set of
sequences needs an exception.
