# Objects and attributes

> Understand how Unify organizes and connects your data.

## Overview

An object groups a particular kind of data in Unify. Each object defines a set of
attributes, and each record holds the values for one individual item.

For example, the company object has attributes such as name, domain, and employee
count. Each company is a record with its own values for those attributes. The
person object works the same way, with attributes such as name, email address,
and job title.

Objects give your team a consistent way to use data from different sources in
filters, outreach, and automation.

## Objects in Unify

Unify supports three kinds of objects:

* **Standard objects** come with Unify, including companies and people. They have
default attributes, and you can add custom attributes to them.
* **CRM objects** represent records from your CRM, including its custom objects.
Their attributes reflect the CRM's fields and are managed by the integration.
* **Custom objects** represent other data relevant to your business. You define
their attributes and how they relate to other objects.

Use a custom attribute to add information about an existing kind of record. Use
a custom object when you need a separate kind of record with its own attributes.
For example, a company's customer tier can be an attribute, while contracts with
individual terms and dates can be a separate object.

## Attributes and values

An attribute defines one piece of information about a record. Its
[value type](/reference/objects/value-types) determines the values it can hold,
such as text, a number, a date, or a choice from a list of options.

All records in an object share its attribute definitions. Their values can
differ, and optional attributes can be empty. You can make a custom attribute
required or require its value to be unique across the object's records.

## Relationships between objects

[Reference attributes](/reference/objects/relate-objects) connect records across
objects. A person's company reference, for example, connects them to a company
record and its attributes.

Relationships let you use related data throughout Unify. You can filter people
by attributes of their companies, or filter companies by related CRM or custom
records. Template variables can follow references to personalize content with
values from related records.

## Work with your data

Use [filters](/reference/filter-builder) to find records and build audiences,
[plays](/reference/plays/overview) to automate actions based on your data, and
[template variables](/reference/sequences/personalization/template-variables)
to personalize outreach.

You can bring records into Unify through integrations or the
[Data API](/developers/api/data/overview). See
[Connecting your data](/developers/connecting-data) for the available approaches.
