## Overview

<PlanAvailability plans="Business" />

Custom objects let you represent the data your team works with. Each has its own
attributes and records, and can connect to other objects through
[reference attributes](/reference/objects/relate-objects).

If you want to add information to companies, people, or another existing object,
you can [create custom attributes](/reference/objects/create-attributes) on that
object.

## Create a custom object

<Steps>
  <Step title="Open objects">
    Open [**Settings → Data management**](https://app.unifygtm.com/dashboard/settings/data/data-management)
    and click **New object**.

    <ThemedImageFrame lightSrc="/images/reference/objects/objects-list-light.png" darkSrc="/images/reference/objects/objects-list-dark.png" alt="The objects list showing object types, API names, and the New object button." />
  </Step>

  <Step title="Name the object">
    Enter an **Object name**. Unify generates an **API name**, which identifies
    the object in integrations and API requests. You can edit the API name
    before creating the object. It must be unique in your workspace and is
    fixed after creation.

    <ThemedImageFrame lightSrc="/images/reference/objects/new-object-light.png" darkSrc="/images/reference/objects/new-object-dark.png" alt="The New object dialog with separate inputs for the object name and API name." />
  </Step>

  <Step title="Create the object">
    Click **Create object** to open its **Attributes** tab. From here, you can
    [add attributes](/reference/objects/create-attributes) to define the
    information its records will hold.
  </Step>
</Steps>

For programmatic setup, use the Data API's
[Create object](/developers/api/data/objects/create) endpoint. To populate your object, see
[Connecting your data](/developers/connecting-data).

## Edit or delete objects

Open a custom object's options menu and choose **Edit object** to change its
display name. Its API name stays the same.

Choosing **Delete object** permanently deletes the object and all of its records.
This also affects integrations and workflows that use that object.
