## Overview

A segment defines a group of companies using shared criteria, such as size,
location, industry, or CRM attributes. Use segments to define territories or
market groups once, then apply those definitions wherever you filter companies.
A company belongs to every segment whose criteria it matches.

Your workspace can have up to 10 segments.

## Create a segment

Administrators manage segments in
[Settings → Company segments](https://app.unifygtm.com/dashboard/settings/features/segments).

<Steps>
  <Step title="Name the segment">
    Click **Create segment**, or **New segment** if your workspace already has
    segments. Give it a name that describes the market or territory.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Define the companies">
    Use the [filter builder](/reference/filter-builder) to combine company
    attributes and supported CRM attributes. You can use Salesforce account
    and user attributes, or HubSpot company and owner attributes.

    <ThemedImageFrame lightSrc="/images/reference/lists/company-segments-light.png" darkSrc="/images/reference/lists/company-segments-dark.png" alt="A shared company segment with its filter definition and matching companies." />
  </Step>

  <Step title="Save the segment">
    Click **Create segment**.
  </Step>
</Steps>

You can also ask [chat](/reference/chat/overview) to create or update a segment.
Describe the company criteria and the name you want to use.

## Use a segment

Choose **Segment** in a company filter, then select the segments to include or
exclude. Selecting several segments matches companies in any of them. Combine
that condition with other filters to narrow the results further.

Use a segment in an [audience](/reference/lists/create-an-audience) to combine a
market definition with changing signals, such as recent website activity. Use
it in an [engagement policy](/reference/engagement-policies/engagement-policies)
to define which companies a team can work. To collect the current matches, use
the filters to [create a list](/reference/lists#create-a-list).

## Update a shared definition

Changes apply wherever the segment is used, including engagement policies that
control access to accounts. Review those uses, then open the segment in settings,
change its criteria, and click **Save segment**.

To retire a segment, replace its use in saved filters before deleting it from
settings.
