## Overview

Bring account and contact information into Unify from a spreadsheet, a
conversation, or another application. Choose an approach based on where your
data lives and whether you need a one-time import or an ongoing integration.

| Method | When to use it |
| - | - |
| CSV | Upload a spreadsheet and map its columns to Unify fields. |
| Chat | Review or refine a file or a set of results before saving a list. |
| MCP | Bring data into Unify from an AI application connected to Unify. |
| Data API | Build a repeatable import from another system. |

## Import your data

<Tabs>
  <Tab title="CSV">
    Upload a CSV to add companies or people to a new or existing list.

    Unify matches companies by domain and people by email. When a matching record
    already exists, the upload can update it with the values you map from your file.
    Review those values before starting the upload.

    ### Prepare your file

    Use a CSV with a header row and a file size of up to 20 MB. Prepare the following
    columns for the type of list you want to create:

    | List type | Columns to provide |
    | - | - |
    | Companies | Company name and domain. |
    | People with email addresses | Email address, plus any contact and company details you want to include. |
    | People who need email enrichment | First name, last name, and company domain. Enable email enrichment during review. |

    If your workspace has required custom fields for companies or people, include
    values for those fields too. The mapping step identifies required destinations.

    ### Upload the file

    <Steps>
      <Step title="Choose the destination">
        In the **Leads** menu, open [Lists](https://app.unifygtm.com/dashboard/lists),
        click **New list**, and choose **Upload CSV**. Choose whether your file
        contains companies or people.

        To add records to an existing list, open it and choose **Upload CSV** from
        **Add records**.
      </Step>

      <Step title="Add the file">
        Upload your CSV. For a new list, enter the list name. Click **Next** to review
        the field mappings.
      </Step>

      <Step title="Map the columns">
        Review the suggested mappings between CSV columns and Unify fields. Adjust
        any incorrect matches and add mappings for the other values you want to
        import.

        People uploads have separate mappings for person and company fields. Map
        company columns when you want the file to supply those company details.
      </Step>

      <Step title="Review the upload">
        Check the preview and estimated number of records to add. Resolve warnings
        about missing or invalid values before continuing.

        For people, choose whether to enrich missing emails or phone numbers. The
        review screen shows the credit cost and which rows can be enriched.
        Successful enrichment uses credits.

        Click **Start upload** when the mappings, preview, and enrichment choices
        are correct.
      </Step>

      <Step title="Review the results">
        Unify processes the upload in the background. Open the destination list to
        see its records, then open **Activity** and select the CSV upload to review
        the completed operation.

        <ThemedImageFrame lightSrc="/images/reference/lists/csv-import-completed-light.png" darkSrc="/images/reference/lists/csv-import-completed-dark.png" alt="CSV upload activity showing two people added from a file with three rows." />
      </Step>
    </Steps>

    ### Resolve skipped records

    The preview identifies duplicate rows and records that cannot be added. Company
    rows need a valid domain. People need a valid email address, either supplied in
    the file or found through enrichment. Providing information for enrichment does
    not guarantee a match.

    Required custom fields also affect whether a record can be added. Review the
    warnings in the preview, correct the file or mappings, and upload the corrected
    rows. A file can contain both valid and invalid rows, so compare the result with
    the number you expected before beginning outreach.
  </Tab>

  <Tab title="Chat">
    Use chat when you want to review, research, or select records before saving
    them. You can attach a CSV or work with results already in a conversation.

    <Steps>
      <Step title="Provide the data and your criteria">
        Open [chat](https://app.unifygtm.com/dashboard/chat) and attach your CSV
        using the paperclip, or continue the conversation that contains your
        results. Describe which companies or people you want to keep and any
        information you want chat to check.
      </Step>

      <Step title="Review and save a list">
        Review the results, then ask chat to save the companies or people to a
        named list. Specify whether to create a new list or use an existing one.
        Companies need a website domain and people need an email address when
        saving new prospects.

        For example: “Save the companies with at least 100 employees to a new
        list named Mid-market planning accounts.”
      </Step>

      <Step title="Check the saved records">
        Open the resulting list and review its members. Check chat's summary
        for records it could not save and correct the affected inputs before
        retrying.
      </Step>
    </Steps>

    Follow [build lists with chat](/reference/lists/build-with-chat) for the full
    workflow, including research, table refinement, and saving selected results.
  </Tab>

  <Tab title="MCP">
    The [Unify MCP connector](/developers/mcp/getting-started) lets a connected
    AI application create or update Unify records and organize them into lists.
    Use this path when you are already working with data in that application.

    Connect Unify, give the application access to the data you want to import,
    and specify the destination list and fields to save. Ask it to match companies
    by domain or people by email and explain how existing values should be
    handled before making changes.

    For example: “Import these companies into Unify using their website domains
    to match existing records. Keep existing company names, fill in missing
    names, and add the records to a new list named Event accounts. Report any
    records that could not be added.”

    The connector provides separate tools to create or update records, create
    a list, and add records to it. Your AI application can combine those tools
    to complete the request. Review its results and open the list in Unify to
    check the imported records.

    See the [record tools](/developers/mcp/tools#objects-and-records) and
    [list tools](/developers/mcp/tools#lists) for supported operations.
  </Tab>

  <Tab title="Data API">
    Use the [Data API](/developers/api/data/overview) to build an import from
    another application or a recurring process. A developer can control how
    incoming fields map to Unify and which values update existing records.
    The Data API, including its list endpoints, is in public beta.

    A typical list import has three parts:

    1. [Create or update records](/developers/api/data/records/upsert), matching
       companies by domain or people by email. Choose which fields to replace
       and which to fill only when empty.
    2. [Create a list](/developers/api/data/lists/create), or select an existing
       list for the same type of record.
    3. [Add the records to the list](/developers/api/data/list-entries/add) using
       their IDs or matching values. Review each result for records that could
       not be added.

    Records must exist in Unify before they can be added through the list-entry
    endpoint. Each add request accepts up to 100 records. The
    [Lists API guide](/developers/api/data/lists/overview) covers sharing,
    membership, and pagination; the
    [Data API guide](/developers/api/data/overview#usage) covers authentication
    and request setup.
